About Eco UCSU

Eco UCSU is an all new element of your Students' Union, aiming to engage the Students and Staff of the University of Cumbria in sustainable thinking and activities. Eco UCSU has evolved from our recent award-winning sustainability project 'Greener Minds,' into 3 exciting individual projects.

Explore our web pages to find out how you can get involved!

We have plenty going on all year round at UCSU, however for those in-between times here are some top tips to get you being more sustainable in your everyday routine!

Whats on this year?

Fairtrade Fortnight – all sites 29th February – 13th March 2016

A whole host of activities will be taking place over this two week period to raise awareness of Fairtrade.  If you’re interested in getting involved (perhaps you fancy dressing as a banana?), you can contact UCSU Community & Partnership Officer, Aden Fry -  aden.fry@cumbria.ac.uk

Fairtrade UCSU

Here at  UCSU it is written into our policy that we must use Fairtrade products where we can! So, what is Fairtrade you ask?

  * Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers.

 * It’s about supporting the development of thriving farming and worker communities that have more control over their futures and protecting the environment in which they live and work.

* And it’s your opportunity to connect with the people who grow the produce that we all depend on.

* Want to find out more about Fairtrade? Checkout our online module

* Visit the Fairtrade website here.

Saving Water, Saving Money

Reusing your water bottle can help save you money, reduce waste and landfill and help the environment! So we have created a fun little video to help you find all the FREE drinking water points on campus!

Free water re-fill points:

  • Fusehill Street - Learning Gateway building near the vending machines
  • Brampton Road - Long corridor leading from the canteen
  • Lancaster - the Library and Gateway Building canteen
  • Ambleside - the Barn

UCSU has GOLD award winning offices!

We have been involved in NUS Green Impact for the past 4 years and have won awards every year for having such sustainable offices!

Green Impact is a sustainability accreditation and awards scheme run by the National Union of Students, covering topics ranging from recycling, to investing in more efficient equipment, encouraging biodiversity and  running campaigns such as Fairtrade Fortnight and The Blackout.

Find out more about UCSU's involvement with Green Impact here.
