Thursday 10th of October 2019 is Mental Health Awareness Day and we thought. as well as sharing the contact information of organisations or services that can help you if you feel as though you need some help with your mental wellbeing we would give you some of the Student Union Teams tips and tricks when it comes to reducing our own stress and checking in with our own mental health.

  • Unloading the senses by going into a quiet room… or sleeping!
  • Exercise – it is good for mind and body.
  • Speak to a loved one – talking to your family, even if it is just about your day is scientifically proven to lower stress.
  • Ride with the emotions and try not to fight them- personally fighting them makes things worse (accept that there’s going to be bad days).
  • Take time out in a forest – feel the wind, listen to the birds and really look around at the beauty that surrounds you. Just stand under the sky and watch the clouds.
  • Take stock of your worries – tackle them one by one when you have a quiet moment. What is most urgent? Is there anything you can do about it? Is it as bad as you first thought? Can you break each down into little steps?
  • Every now and then treat yourself – you probably do deserve it!
  • Take time to focus on what you have achieved and the positive things that you have done – remember! We are the strongest critics of ourselves.
  • Listen to my favourite music with my eyes closed and just focus on only that
  • Watch my favourite film
  • Spend time with family, friends or my horse- without a doubt always helps
  • Be creative – draw, sing, paint, write; it really doesn’t matter if it’s not high art!!
  • Cook something simple from fresh ingredients and share it with a friend or loved one.
  • Spend some real quality time with my children.
  • Volunteer my time – doing something for somebody else is great for boosting my mood!
  • Try to get an early night!

We hope these help you in trying to reduce your own stress levels but if you do feel like you are struggling with your mental health please consider reaching out to one of the organisations linked below.
