Are you interested in supporting the University in developing new programmes of study, reviewing and evaluating the quality of existing programmes, enhancing your CV, and helping to develop and improve the student experience across all of our campuses?

How can you get involved?

We are looking to recruit new paid Student Reviewers who will contribute to the University’s Validation and Periodic Review processes, asking questions and giving the student perspective on a range of academic and pastoral issues

What is Validation or Periodic Review?

Validation is the process for approving new programmes of study whilst Periodic Review is the process that ensures that existing programme of study continue to meet required standards, provide good quality learning opportunities, and result in a positive student experience and good quality student outcomes

What will you be required to do?

Student Reviewers will be allocated to specific Validation or Periodic Review events which take place across the academic year. You will join a Panel of both internal and external academic representatives and work together to provide written feedback on programme documentation before meeting with the academic teaching team to discuss your questions face-to-face in a supportive and collegiate meeting environment. As a Student Reviewer, you may explore any themes or issues that affect the student experience and so will play a vital role in shaping the programmes that the University will offer (or continue to offer) in the future.

How will your involvement benefit you?

  • Being a Student Reviewer should be a personally rewarding experience as you will be contributing to the development of a positive student experience
  • The Student Reviewer is a paid role for which you will receive a fee per event
  • Being a Student Reviewer can help you to enhance your CV and develop professional skills which are valued by a range of different employers
  • As a Student Reviewer, you will have the opportunity to work collaboratively and so develop your communication and team-working skills
  • Whilst most events are held on University campuses, occasionally Student Reviewers will have the opportunity to visit one of our education partners within the UK or overseas

How will your involvement benefit the University?

  • Student Reviewers play a vital role in promoting the student voice and contributing to academic communities of practice
  • By listening to Student Reviewers, we are better able to assure a high quality student experience and recognise excellence in teaching and learning

What support will you be given?

You will receive joint training annually from the University’s Academic Quality and Development Service and the Students’ Union (UCSU). You will also receive a Student Reviewer Handbook and (once allocated to an event) will have access to a dedicated Validation Officer who will be there to answer any questions or concerns you might have

Who can apply?

The role will be particularly useful to those students looking to develop skills in documentary analysis, critical reflection, communication, team-working, and negotiation. Student Reviewers should normally:

  • Be currently enrolled on a University of Cumbria programme of study (essential)
  • Be able to provide the name of an academic sponsor, such as a personal tutor or programme leader (essential)
  • Be able to demonstrate good time management and organisation skills (essential)
  • Have the ability/willingness to travel between campuses (desirable)
  • Have previous experience as a Student Academic Rep, as a member of the UCSU Panel, or as an UCSU Officer representing student interests (desirable)

How to apply
