Car Parking at Ambleside

Over the summer there have been some changes to the car parking at the Ambleside campus, the number of bays has been reduced on the main car park at the entrance to the campus. I have to drive to University a commute which takes nearly an hour and have paid for a parking permit, which is around £65. So far this year I have been able to park once on the car park. The other times I have had to park elsewhere.

Parking on other sites can be very costly. I would like to suggest a couple of solutions, either the University reserves a bay for each permit holder, this does not have to be 24/7 it could be worked out with timetables or, a refund scheme is set up, where students can present evidence of paying for parking elsewhere and the University reimburses the cost.

Update:

The Panel discussed how this issue may be resolved if student pricing could be applied on local transport.

Coomunity & Partnership Officer, Hannah Price to review the feasibility of this proposal.

Yes, I agree you ether have to be here very early or late. Maybe on idea would be to close the car park to non uni people monday to friday? Or have a separate permit only car park somewhere else?

Another side is I got to uni over 20 minutes before my lecture yesterday and ended up being late as it took me so long to find a space.

I find this worrying as I agree the car park has been significantly reduced in size and yet more accommodation for more students has been built. Not to mention, the car park has signs quoting "University of cumbria parking only" but these are removed daily and replaced with signs quoting "Public pay and display car park". As there are at least 4 other public car parks in Ambleside, it is in my opinion that the university car park should only allow parking for university students and employees, not members of the public.

I agree! Ambleside as a whole has an issue with parking but to increase the capacity of students living here whilst reducing parking is just unsustainable. The need for a car in a campus such as Ambleside is more evident compared to larger/city campuses due to its more rural location.
