hi there,

i have thought of some ideas for the new freshers for this coming September. Aside from drinking some students may wish to do other things as well. Here are some idea for the first week of university before freshers

Give tours around the town so that people get to know Carlisle but also allow people to interact with other new students.

Also, why not include frisbee events or rounders at rickerby park or Bitts park. That way students get to know the local parks and how peaceful environments helps with university stress. Obviously, have staff at either campus to escort the new students to the park/parks.

Finally, offer 1-1 drop in sessions for the first month for students who are homesick. This allows students to talk to someone instead of bottling up their feelings. The times would be preferably be slightly outside standard office hours in case of higher than expected demand.

I definitely like the idea about Homesick Students drop-in and support as this leads to health vulnerabilities are students are uprooted from environments where they are surrounded by supportive relationships, and planted in isolation.

Next year we will have peer mentors who can signpost those who are home-sick to seek support.

Freshers last year was all heavily promoted and beneficial for Carlisle but not Lancaster. I see the same happening again. What about those who do not want to go out and get drunk? In my first year there was a bouncy castle- something silly but got a lot of people involved and getting to know one another. Also last year the freshers booklets did not deliver. Morecambe bowling was not aware of the discount that was advertised in the booklet and Dominoes half price night did not also know of the event! This caused a lot of problems! Again it looked as though Lancaster was neglected here.

Thank you for your comments, I apologise if you felt that Lancaster events were not promoted as heavily as the Carlisle events, we have a communications plan in place and follow the same plan for each campus so the line-ups in Lancaster, Carlisle and Ambleside are promoted to the same level. All the event line ups for welcome 2017 are now live on our website www.ucsu.me and we are offering a range of events, we feel there is something for everyone. I would also like to apologise that you felt that last year’s offer did not deliver, we contacted both companies with regards to the offers available and one company apologised for the miss communication and ran the event the following week and the other company confirmed that they were running the offer subject to availability. Thank you, Team UCSU

I think these are great ideas especially with regards to homesickness. I got it when I first went to boarding school when I was 11 and it was horrible. Also it would be great to organise some nee sports teams tho it may be abit late now.
