Royal Voluntary Service are a charity that exist to enrich the lives of older people across Britain. At the moment they support around 100,000 older people every year and have a target to support 2 million by 2023. They run a variety of different services across Cumbria and Lancashire which include cafes, shops, chair based exercises, a hospital on ward service and ‘Meet and Greet’ volunteers at Furness General hospital. They have recently joined together with the organisation ‘helpforce’ to enhance the amount of volunteering they can offer.
Key tasks include providing friendship, companionship and support through conversation, reading and past-time. Working with patients with Dementia may be a key part of this opportunity.
You’ll liaise with other hospital staff regarding the practical support required and be part of a wider team ensuring on going and effective integrated support for the older person and their family so they can return home.
This is ideal if you want a flexible volunteering opportunity to suit your availability, including non-regular hours such as meal times, to make new friends, to be part of a team, to develop your skills and experience and contribute to the work of the charity.
You’ll need to have good communication skills including listening, questioning, clarifying, observing and responding, the ability to provide feedback and information to a co-ordinator and complete basic administration tasks as well as knowledge of confidentiality requirements.
Training will be provided and you’ll be reimbursed for out of pocket expenses.
