Develop new skills and improve confidence

Running in an election is a unique experience that will help to develop your confidence, communication skills and much more! We will give you training for the campaign period, so don’t worry about facing it alone.

Stand out to future employers and enhance your CV

Working as a Student Officer allows you to gain a diverse range of skills that few jobs can offer. Famous business leaders, politicians, journalists and broadcasters all started out in students' unions and now you can too!

Not many students can say that they organised their own university wide campaign and ran in an election voted for by up to 10,000 people. Being a student officer makes you the most senior staff within UCSU. You are in a position that it would usually take years to get to.

Election roles get paid £16,731

Yes they’re paid jobs!

Open to all years, in all levels, at any level of experience

You don’t have to be in your final year to run for election, you can take a year out of your studies and get some valuable work experience.

You don’t need any previous experience to be an officer - if you care about the student experience then you’re the right person for the job!

Anyone can win!

It’s not a popularity contest, anyone can win. There have been times when existing officers have tried to be re-elected and been unsuccessful despite presumably knowing more people. It’s an open field…

Have the freedom to pursue what you are passionate about

You’ll get to work on campaigns for the things that interest you, meaning you can enjoy coming to work every day. You’ll also get the support of the rest of the UCSU staff team.

Be the voice of 10,000 students

You can represent the views of all University of Cumbria students, and nationally too.

Work with the University on big decisions and create real change

Student Officers get to make big decisions at high levels of the University and Union that creates real and positive change for Cumbria students.

Meet new people and have fun

Election time is an exciting time; you’ll meet loads of new people and have a great time doing it. If you win, you’ll get the chance to network with people you wouldn’t usually encounter and be part of fun experiences that you wouldn’t get elsewhere.

What is there to lose?

Woody Allen once said “there is no failure except in no longer trying”.
