General Election Candidates 2017

On Wednesday 24th May, Bethany (Community and Partnership Officer) contacted all MP Candidates in the Carlisle, Westmorland and Lonsdale, and Lancaster and Fleetwood constituencies with the following challenge:

To answer the following questions in a short video (no longer than 1 minute 30 seconds) by 31st May 2017.

• Undergraduate students leave university with an average of £44,000 of debt from tuition fees and maintenance loans and from this September, universities can charge up to £9,250 a year for tuition. What are your views and plans regarding University tuition fees?

• Previously students on health courses have been eligible for NHS bursaries, but this has recently been stopped. With these students essentially working full time on placements and completing degrees, they now have the added pressure of full student loans. What are your views on charging these students whose training is vital to our society?

• The NHS service is vital to many people in this country, and especiallyto students, and so need to be funded adequately. What are your plansfor NHS funding and your stance on privatisation of these services?

• In the North West, the environment is a significant part of life. What plans do you have to sustain and improve the local environment?
