We sat down with Ligia Villaroya, the new Institute Officer, to learn more about her before she takes up her role on July 1st!
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? What did you study?
- I'm currently studying an MSc in Occupational Therapy. I've always been passionate about person-centred healthcare and making sure people feel heard and included. I enjoy bringing people together and creating spaces where everyone feels represented and supported.
What made you want to run for this role?
- I was lucky to have a really supportive community during my undergraduate years, and I know how much of a difference that can make. I wanted to run because I'd love to help create more opportunities for students to connect, make friends, and make sure their voices are heard.
What do you plan to focus on during your time in office? Is there a particular project that you hope to launch or an issue you want to address?
- I want to work closely with class reps and students to make sure any concerns are listened to and acted on. Whether it's academic issues, student wellbeing, or creating more opportunities to get involved on campus, I'd like to help make the student experience as positive and rewarding as possible.
What is one skill or experience you have that you think would be useful in your role?
- I've been involved in research projects that required me to work closely with communities, listen to people's experiences, and turn what I learned into meaningful outcomes. It's taught me how to listen, communicate effectively, and follow through on projects from start to finish.
What is one thing that people might be surprised to know about you?
- I can't handle spicy food at all! Which is quite ironic considering I'm from the Philippines. No matter how many times I've tried, I've never managed to build up a tolerance for it.
What is your favourite place to go? Do you have a favourite spot on campus?
- At Fusehill Street, my favourite spot is definitely the Learning Gateway. Having 24/7 access has saved me more times than I'd like to admit. At Lancaster, I enjoy spending time on the green whenever the weather allows. I'm also excited to explore more of the university's campuses.
You have the chance to have dinner with one historical or public figure; who would it be and why?
- Meryl Streep. She's an incredible actress with such a fascinating career, and I think she'd have some amazing stories and advice to share. Plus, I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't ask a few questions about Miranda Priestly.
How do you think your friends would describe you in three words?
- Supportive
- Determined
- Warm
What is one goal, personal or professional, that you hope to achieve this year?
- This year, I want to continue growing as a future occupational therapist while making a positive impact on the student community. I'd love to help create opportunities that bring people together and make the university feel a little more welcoming for everyone.
