Rachel - Getting to Know You

Name: Rachel O'Donovan

Job Title: Marketing & Communications Coordinator

What did you do before UCSU?

Well, I have been around UoC for a long while. I did my undergraduate degree in Applied Psychology here followed by a masters degree in Psychological Research Methods. While finishing my masters I worked in the UoC library team as a Graduate Intern. Following this, and building on from how I tailored my degrees I moved into the UoC marketing team before taking up my position here with UCSU.

Can you tell us a little about you?

I'm a massive book worm, I own a staggering amount of books and I will get them all read one day, once I have reread Harry Potter just one more time.... I also love TV, my favourite show is Supernatural and if someone mentioned the show within a three-mile radius I hear it. I'm also an amateur Ripperologist, I always say if I had three wishes, one of them would be to know who Jack the Ripper actually was.  I own so many lipsticks, it's becoming a problem, every shade under the sun, even if I only wear about four shades on the regular. I LOVE DOGS, sorry but  I do love dogs.

What do you do at UCSU?

I handle everything to do with our social media, I edit our magazine, The Squealer, write our newsletter and any speeches our Officers might do. I also work very closely with the press and the comms team within the university. I look after our noticeboards and any print materials coming out of the union. I work very closely with our graphic design intern and with our sales and events coordinator. To sum up, anything that comes out of UCSU, I have probably had a hand in.

What do you love most about your job?

The constant change! There is no place like a student union in the world of work, one moment I am having a conversation about the layout of our magazine and the next I could be talking about the number of condoms we need to order for freshers or about what the Officers are going to say to everyone at graduation next month. This job is so much more than I thought it would be when I took it on but I love it!
