We have spoken directly with the company in charge of the cafe in the Gateway to gain a better understanding on why it is currently running the way it is. When things were running up at The View, there ended up being issues with the leaking roof which revealed a few other issues when this was being fixed. Hence, the scaffolding still surrounding the Gateway as things are being repaired in segments according to safety and functionality. The company is currently trying their best to work around the hours/spaces of repair whilst ensuring students have as much access as they can, therefore they put up the cafe on the ground floor which is also slightly different to the one in Martineu in terms of fair trade options etc.

There are plans underway to help increase the accessibility to the cafes and its convenience such as app ordering and pick up and go options that are in discussion. However, as the company has only operated on our campus for 9 weeks there is not much data or feedback to go off to implement big changes just yet. The company and the SU are in talks and will roll out surveys and focus groups in the near future to gain a more comprehensive understanding of what students require.

We apologise for any inconvenience in the meantime and for any feedback or questions about the cafe, you can go to @cumbriasocial on Instagram.

Need to be open longer and more options. The Starbucks in the main building has now been taken over by the same university company as the martinu. This greatly reduces the menu removing things like frappes and chai latte which catered to students with a different taste. With the options being the same, its only so long before they close the downstairs coffee shop AGAIN meaning your options are to walk up to the view, which is only open a few hours a day, or walk to the martenu which is further away from the library making it inconvenient when studying. Also last time the coffee shop moved into the view, I only saw it operational for a week or so before it was never used again meaning you've walked up all the stairs for nothing, wasting study time.

It feels very much like the uni is ignoring the student voice after there were 2 separate petitions last year. 1 to move the coffee shop back downstairs and another to keep Starbucks open longer to the end of the summer term.

If the franchise with Starbucks can no longer be supported, more options should be built into the menu and we should be ensured the location won't be closed AGAIN
