You might not think flooding has anything to do with you – however as a student in Cumbria being flood aware is important.

Cumbria is a great place to live and study with space to enjoy the great outdoors. It is also an area with a history of extreme weather, and last year 6319 homes were flooded when storm Desmond struck.

There has been a great investment in flood defences in previous years, however unprecedented volumes of water compromise these.

As students and new residents of the county, the Environment Agency would like to give you some advice on being resilient and flood aware.

Houses which students rent were hit in the recent flooding, and being prepared can save your life.

If you are renting a property in a flood risk area sign up for flood warnings, visit www.gov.uk/flood or call Floodline 24/7 on 0345 988 1188. You will also be able to find out more about managing your own flood risk on the website.

For more NUS advice on how students can prepare for the risk of flooding visit: http://www.nus.org.uk/en/advice/housing-advice/are-you-prepared-for-the-risk-of-flooding/

Information on flooding can also be found on the Lancashire County Council and Cumbria County Council websites.
