As of writing this, I’ve been in post just over two months, and already I feel like I’ve learned so much and achieved plenty.

One of my main focuses so far has been directly engaging with the student body across social media. By boosting the visibility of the Union, we’re also raising awareness of everything else happening across the University.

Since being elected, I’ve had the chance to visit Ambleside several times for fun and fabulous team-building workshops (plus some very tasty food along the way!). Honestly, I had no idea Ambleside was so picturesque and packed with great eateries. These visits also gave me the opportunity to really get to know my fellow officers. Working and socialising with Kara, Haroon, and the rest of the team has been fantastic.

My first big challenge came almost immediately with the July Graduations. This was a whirlwind of emotions, as I not only gave the speech of thanks (with huge support from Rachel O’Donovan, our Comms & Social Media lead), but I also graduated myself the very next day! One moment I was walking in the academic procession, and the next I was shaking hands with the Vice Chancellor. The nerves, the excitement, and ultimately the pride I felt in the University, the Students’ Union, and myself were indescribable.

And yes, side note—the food at the Vice Chancellor’s lunch was incredible. You’ll probably notice a theme here… I love food.

Another highlight has been attending workshops and training to strengthen my skills as your Wellbeing Officer. Most notably, the WonkHE training at Lancaster, where we explored new ways of problem-solving and engaging students.

My biggest takeaway? The importance of dynamic presentation on social media. For example, if we provide new microwaves or stationery, don’t just post a picture—make it fun, creative, and eye-catching with Canva or Photoshop. This idea is already being put to great use by our team (Oscar, our Mature Students’ Officer, being one of the first to try it out!).

Welcome Week has now come and gone, and just like our new freshers, I feel I’ve truly settled into my role. Highlights so far include:

· Welcoming our first cohort of Pears students

· Collaborating with CUFC

· Creating content alongside ITV and Cumbria Police

· Beginning partnerships with the Accommodation and Catering teams

· Completing my first Welcome Week

· Running my first wellbeing campaign RUN, SPRINT, CHAOS (thank you Ryan!)

· Boosting UCSU’s social media presence with my colleague Rachel

It’s been a brilliant start, and I’m so excited to build on this momentum—creating events that enhance wellbeing and help our students make amazing memories during their time here.

Best wishes, Aidan
