Martindale Valley Deer Rut trip
Meeting at stores at 4:45am (leaving at 5am), we will be travelling via minibus (PLEASE CONTACT US IF YOU WISH TO DRIVE YOURSELF) to Martindale Valley, near Ullswater. Here we will go on a short walk along a road and then join a short section of public footpath. We hope to see and hear red deer rutting throughout the morning, with the trip being at the peak time of year for witnessing this natural spectacle. We hope to be back on campus by 11am (11:30 at the latest).
The herd of red deer at Martindale is one of the oldest, native herds in the UK, making us extremely lucky to be able to see them so close to home!
Last year, this trip was a great success, with sightings of young and old stags pacing and bellowing, as well as large groups of hinds grazing in the bracken.
What to bring?
- breakfast and snacks
- water and a warm drink
- suitable footwear and clothing (wrap up warm for the cold autumn morning)
- a headtorch with a red light (we cannot use white lights)
- binoculars (if you own them)
If you don't own any equipment, please feel free to borrow it from stores beforehand! We will be bringing a spotting scope and the thermal monocular.
