Description

Welcome to the Wildlife Society!

We're a group of students that love wildlife and nature, and we want to share our knowledge and experience with others. We’ve been working hard to help make the Brampton Road a wilder place. Thanks to the work of the society we now have a flourishing biodiversity area which is home to tree sparrows, shrews and northern marsh orchids.

The society’s yearly programme includes:

· Six talks from students and professionals throughout the year

· Trips

· Local walks

· Training sessions

· An annual calendar competition – submit your best images for consideration for 2020!

· Volunteering at local events

· Participation in national biodiversity surveys including the University Mammal Challenge and the University Moth Challenge

We had some great activities in the first half of the 2019-2020 academic year including a visit to the Wilderland Film Festival, building some bird boxes for the campus tree sparrows and beginning to plant a new wildflower meadow. We adapted to the changing circumstances by running our very first Virtual BioBlitz - an online event involving students and experts from across the UK, providing their expertise in the forms of workshops and films. We even managed to run our annual Worm Charming Championships!

We're currently developing a programme of events to take place safely in the new academic year. We're happy to get involved in new activities, and welcome any ideas from our members. We also have spaces available on our committee - so if leadership is your thing, please do get in touch.

In 2019 we were thrilled to be nominated for a number of awards as a result of our hard work. We won Best Society at the Cumbria Salute Awards and we were nominated for Best New Society at the National Student Awards. We were absolutely delighted and want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who was involved in nominating us!

Whether you're confident with nature skills or a complete amateur we are looking for enthusiastic people to join our group, and we welcome students from any course. There are still places on our committee if you fancy getting involved in leadership!

Thanks for reading - we hope to hear from you soon.
