Cumbria Law Centre has served the people of the county for over 20 years. It is one of over 40 Law Centres accross the UK, each being an independent community-led charity. Cumbria Law Centre specialises in Social Welfare Law, offering free legal advice and casework to more than 2,000 individuals each year, who could not otherwise find or afford a lawyer. The Centre specialises in:
Housing - landlord disputes/rent and mortgage arrears/tenancy agreement issues/antisocial behaviour-related issues/homelessness, eviction and repossession/disrepair
Welfare Benefits - specialist advice on ESA, JSA, PIP, DLA, Housing Benefit etc / appeals to lower and upper tribunals/community care-related matters
Employment - tribunals/disciplinary process/change of conditions/whistle-blowing/takeovers/bullying/discrimination
Cumbria Law Centre covers a broad geographical area including urban centres and some of the most remote, rural locations in mainland England.
We employ a team of solicitors and specialist caseworkers with expert knowledge of the interlocking issues that frequently face people on the lowest incomes
We have mature and well developed Volunteer and Law student Programmes offering opportunities for Law Students to benefit from taking part in this socially vital and personally fulfilling work. We allow delegates to closely observe and participate in the life of the Law Centre, it's workers and it's clients.
Law students will be able to research points of law and will be able to work with volunteers and other members of staff. It is mainly a clerical/administrative opportunity in a friendly, local charity helping those in most urgent need.
If you are a student who has a particular interest in this subject, please feel free to apply
